The art of survival is not an easy task, while living in the cold hard streets of Englewood. It seems that all young Black men from Chicago are the only ones who have to deal with harassment or ostracism, but the “Loud Pack Team” doesn’t use this as an excuse to press forward. Although, violence and gunshots ring out in their neighborhood every hour, the music continues.

The Loud Pack Team are a new strain of Hip Hop, a different kind of lyricism. Over the years, the crew has assembled a total package of musical geniuses, magnetic charisma, and business acumen The team consists of two lyricists, King Bone and Young Flash. Also, Scotty G (songwriter and hype man) contribute to the team’s solid structure.

“Our movement is crazy because our work ethic is incredibly consistent. While you’re sleeping, we’re working and churning out hit songs,” proclaims team member King Bone.

BONUS

WATCH "AIN'T BALLIN" NOW

The Chicago-based lyricists are bringing something different when it comes to Chicago music. Their cinematic street dialect, phenomenal wordplay, and witty punchlines set them apart from the competition. The rap crew describes their music as authentic ‘Street Rap’.The ubiquity of this group will stay true because this is what the fans want. They write about their reality and the reality of their peers in the sheisty streets of Chicago. Overall, the goal is to take the listener on a journey into their world without the violence.

“Our fans respect the fact that we are raw and authentic. We want them to feel the power of our movement,” states Young Flash.

Determination and perseverance has driven the team to break through the monotony and staleness of the current Hip Hop landscape. They are placing blood sweat and tears into their music with visions of grandeur in mind- winning is not an option, it is a goal.

In the early part of 2016, the team released the current single “Ain’t Ballin”, and it is earning unprecedented critical praises in the hip-hop community. Moreover, the visual of the song depicts raw intensity including the message – the life that you say you’re living, it doesn’t exist. It is arguably one of the top street anthems of the year, officially putting The Loud Pack Team on the radar of artists to look out for.

Innovatively, The Loudpack Team are creating a global following with good music, incredible videos, and artistic ingenuity. The next time that you hear the word, ‘Loud’ in any conversation, it will remind you of the team that’s got next from Chicago, LOUDPACK!

A man who was confronted by a gas station clerk for stealing a bag of Flamin' Hot Cheetos tried to burn down the business Sunday, police say.

Joshua Lee Crook, 33, was charged Monday with first-degree attempted arson, a felony, and three misdemeanors. His bail is $20,000, cash only.

Just before 5 p.m. Sunday, Crook went into a gas station in the 3100 block of South Grand Boulevard and picked up a bag of the Cheetos, police say. The store manager, who alleges Crook had stolen from his store before, told Crook to put the bag down if he wasn't going to pay for it.

Crook put the Cheetos back and left. About a minute later, he walked back into the store, grabbed the bag again and started walking out of the store, police records say. The manager confronted him; Crook pushed the manager and punched him in the face, police say.

Outside, Crook grabbed a gas pump nozzle and threw it on the ground, police say. Gasoline began pooling on the lot, and Crook threw a lit cigarette to the ground. He tried, but failed, to start a fire, authorities say. There was no damage.

The misdemeanor charges are for third-degree assault, theft and trespassing.

Police released an unusual mug shot of Crook but did not immediately explain what is going on in the photo. It appears someone is trying to hold Crook still for the photo.

Crook lives in the 5800 block of Southwest Avenue.

The Zulu Nation, who once rushed to defend its founder Afrika Bambaataa against a sexual molestation allegation by former member Ronald Savage, is attempting to distance itself from the scandal by changing leadership.

The New York Daily News reports, members announced this weekend the group is seeking new leader for an “in-depth reassessment.”

On March 31, Ronald Savage, a reported former music executive spoke exclusively with the newspaper and gave a detail account of his relationship with the “Planet Rock” artist. The following Sunday, three other men came forward, also former members of the 40 year old organization, and also spoke of the Bambaataa’s sexual misconduct.

The 59-year-old responded to the allegations via his lawyer and emphatically denied them. Since then, a former bodyguard came forward providing credence to the alleged victims, giving the allegations even more legs to stand on.

Zulu Nation said it was “saddened by current events” but will use this as an opportunity to help those effected by sexual abuse. The group’s action steps include “providing support for victims of abuse, rape and molestation and working more closely on other social issues existing in communities such as drug addiction, alcoholism and mental health.”

Amid the mounting allegations being leveled against Bambaataa, KRS-One found himself in hot water when he alleges to have been misquoted as not caring if little boys have been sexually abused. He then clarified his comments in a lengthy blog posts.

“Of course, I care if a young person is being abused or even neglected…it is more the fact that I don’t gossip, I don’t take sides in real disputes that don’t concern me, I don’t slander people’s names and I don’t believe in abandoning your friends when they may be accused of crimes or make mistakes in life.”

Bambaataa has not released a statement since the change in leadership.

A Tribe Called Quest has always been regarded as one of the most influential groups in Hip-Hop history. Phife released only one solo album, Ventilation: Da LP, in 2000. Information about reason for the death is still not concrete but we will certainly update you once that’s available. Rest in peace to a great one.

If you’ve ever found yourself in the uniquely satisfying position of writing or tweeting something critical of Donald Trump and his lowest common denominator presidential campaign, then you may have noticed your mentions quickly deteriorating into an intellect-sabotaging dumpster fire. Though plenty of these grammatically insufficient accounts do belong to people who are indeed real (nightmarishly real), astute Twitter users have started noticing that at least some of these would-be Trump supporters are just spam accounts tasked with tweeting the same exact shit over and over again:

These particular tweets, first noted by Detroit Free Press reporter Niraj Warikoo, arrived shortly after Trump’s victory over both Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio in Nevada. The widely spammed tweet, Warikoo reports, was likely copied and pasted directly from a tweet by Univision journalist Enrique Acevedo:

Still not convinced? There’s even more:

"It’s going to be an amazing two months," Trump said during his Nevada victory speech, according to the New York Times. "We might not even need the two months, to be honest." With a presidential campaign practically built on the xenophobic platform of flipping blatant racism into some sort of perverted virtue, the irony of Trump’s campaign possibly beefing up their Twitter action with fake AF accounts to project the appearance of multicultural support is profound (and deeply unsettling).

However, as anyone currently in possession of a fully functioning brain can attest, Trump’s own Twitter account needs no embellishment to cause immediate offense by further strengthening a reawakened core of voters concerned solely with the protection of racist ideologies. On more than one occasion, Trump has tweeted or retweeted Nazi imagery and related rhetoric to the immediate co-sign of millions of Twitter followers.

Trump, however, seems fully aware of exactly who is drinking his tainted Kool-Aid. "We won with poorly educated," Trump told reporters on Tuesday, according to Gawker. "I love the poorly educated." In fact, CNN notes that Trump did indeed poll higher in Nevada than any other candidate among those with a high school education or less. Sadly, Trump is expected to continue taking advantage of those with a limited education as the race for the White House becomes more and more depressing with each passing day.

The media personality was recently a guest on a podcast where she told a story that began with Jay Z discovering Cam was the person who stole his parking spot, and ended with the Dipset crew getting kicked out of the Def Jam building. It didn’t take long for Cam to hear bout Civil’s story, and he’s decided to put her on blast, denying the events ever happened.

But u not gonna put me in ya bullshit,” he began, explaining that it was his own choice to leave Def Jam, and that he didn’t have a falling out with Jay until after the fact. “Despite what people think Jay-Z and I were not enemies..
There are some radio people who make a great deal of money and LOVE the company they work for in Urban radio. They are able to pursue outside opportunities, work reasonable hours, may be at a unionized station and they get paid well for appearances. They are heavily promoted by the station and given carte blanche to use social media to promote their platforms in and out of radio. This is how it should be across the board but unfortunately these people on the urban side are rare.

This weekend, urban radio industry vet Kris Kelley was found dead in her apartment. Is this unfortunate? Yes. Is it shocking? No, Is she the first one? No, as a matter of fact three black women in total who worked at WGCI have been found the exact same way. Val Landon in 2004, Karen Jones (Shannon Dell) in 1998 and now Kris Kelley. There have been many more black jocks over the years who have been found the same way. Alone, in an apartment, dead. I am confident that the thought has run through just about every urban radio pro and music industry exec’s mind who is about to read this story and that is… it could happen to any of us. After so many years of learning how to disconnect because of frequent moves, if we are not parents or in a current or longstanding relationship those years of struggle can take a toll on our relationships and on us.

I am actually from radio but I have never had the love and attachment that so many urban radio people have for it. I wanted to be a singer and used it as a way of becoming one. I have worked for some of the most greedy black owners and a few of the most corrupt black programmers you can ever imagine but I learned more than I could have ever imagined about the industry and life as a whole. Those mom and pop stations were inevitable instant vestibules that were worthless unless you got everything you could get out of it before you were fired for something “stupid” like um I don’t know… poor ratings? That was one of the first lessons I learned, when you walk into a situation not willing to “do the work” you will be fired, in a record amount of time, for the same reason.

Group of friends having fun at party — Image by © Michael Patrick O’Leary/Corbis

What was most disparaging was the urban station owners that trained black announcers by robbing them of their value by telling them how worthless they were and that they should be glad to have a job because the white stations were never going to hire us. These were not white owners, no sir.. these were BLACK station owners who jumped like whores through a hoop when the corporations came along and offered them a ton of money (for their services) to abandon ship in the mid to late 90s. Most have not been heard from since. Unfortunately, the damage was done and I realize now it was a cruel and dirty game that those black owners played on us because we were young and impressionable. Truth be told, it was not US that the white stations were not going to hire… it was THEM, the black station owners.

As age breeds clarity than it’s evident that this was their way of controlling us and keeping us on board. Unfortunately, many of us left thinking that was our truth and limited ourselves to only working in urban radio our entire careers when many of us had/have the potential to do so much more. Many black owners didn’t encourage us they discouraged us. This was not the reality for all black jocks but it was for a majority of us. Like the baby elephant that is tied to a pole with a rope and can’t move even as that rope eventually becomes a tiny string to a full-grown elephant. He is so trained to think he can’t break that string, he doesn’t even try anymore. This is what has allowed comedians to come into our industry and take what was rightfully ours, what WE earned but because they came with leverage and confidence and they were not damaged by black station owners (who were damaged by the industry years prior) they got the glory. There are a few exceptions but nowhere near in comparison to those who are stuck.

As a champion for the underdog, I thought it was my duty to be a listening ear over the years to those who have lost their way and couldn’t take what they had learned and turn it into a GREATER opportunity. Those who could no longer find work and were suffering from depression that could easily be linked to the well-known disconnect this industry grants you when you are no longer working but the truth is, I can’t. I don’t think any one person has the capacity to do that without it deeply affecting them but I am always trying to find a way to do it through the Radio Facts medium.

Let’s face it, in this industry, the one that we love so much, most of us have very few true friends mostly because I learned a long time ago that when you are not working 98% of the people who you are dealing with today won’t take your calls next week. If you don’t believe that’s true then God bless you. No harm done and you can’t be pissed because it’s just business. I can respect that, so as a result, I don’t go to many industry events unless it’s client or business related because I never bonded with those people intentionally and I’ve never been good at being phony but I have still extended a favor or two to them from time to time when they are between jobs etc.

We must all have better ways to allocate our time and who we spend it with and understand this is the Music and Radio BUSINESS. I got it early on and it makes sense. As with ANY business, when you can’t do anything for people they throw you away but that doesn’t mean you have to relegate YOURSELF to the garbage bin. Unlike most other industries, Radio and Music is a “Lifestyle” occupation and it’s very easy to cross the lines and to really believe that these people are your friends. That’s not to say some are not but we all must be realistic and understand that for the most part…. it’s BUSINESS and it’s WORK FIRST.
Time and again I have seen people who I once admired rise through the ranks, get older, lose their jobs, get sick or whatever and disappear into lonely isolation. Even if I have never had a conversation with them, I may get an email or a message on FB or even a phone call on my cell phone, (when I did not give them my number). They put things in the subject line like “Call me.” There is no “Hello,” or “Nice to Meet you” or “How are you?” just “Call me” like, dropeverything because I owe it to them. I can tell they are really hurting on the inside and they are trying to maintain a level of previous dignity. I have gotten attitude when I don’t call them and nasty responses but for the most part, I laugh it off and try to return their calls because I get it. It’s the wounded ego, accustomed to everyone being at their disposal… looking for a band-aid.

Urban radio people tend to make half if not much less than pop radio counterparts in the same markets but there are some urban jocks who are so dedicated to the game it’s akin to addiction but the glass pipe is a glass ceiling and most of the time a self-imposed one because we don’t exercise our leverage when we have it. We fail to understand that the time to “DO THE WORK” is when you ARE working. That’s the worst time to relax. I see people in their 40s, 50s and even 60s still waiting for their big break, instead of jumping on technology or making their own way they get stuck and remain in the mode of “Who’s gonna hire me next?” They get validation and joy by being affiliated with call letters. I have seen countless urban jocks die while looking for another gig, even part-time. For some it literally becomes their identity.

So what’s the solution to all of this? At this point there are two types of people in the industry. Those who are working and those who are not. Unfortunately, that’s really what it boils down to. Those who are working are trying so hard to keep their jobs, remain relevant and progressive that they have to keep their eyes on the prize. To their credit being in a race and turning to the sidelines affects your ability to win. I have talked to both ends and I get both sides. Those who are not working want validation they want those who are in the race to cheer THEM on and to know that they have not been forgotten about. They want to reach out to people who they talked to before to express their frustrations in hopes of being offered employment sometimes just validation. The people who are working have informed me that if they took all those calls they would never be able to do THEIR jobs. One told me “Man, I don’t have time to talk about yesterday and the old industry, I’m trying to keep a f$%kn job TODAY.”

When we are depressed it is always advisable for us to reach out to others. Working in an industry that is so exclusive like radio and music, no one can understand us like other industry people so when we reach out and we are rejected that could be the catalyst to even more harm being done. What’s the solution? Understand the concept. Cherish the memories and find a way to create NEW ones perhaps in another industry. If you feel that radio is all you know, then challenge yourself to learn something else because unrequited love is not only heartbreaking it can be hazardous. In addition, people who are currently WORKING don’t even talk to each other much, ESPECIALLY on the Urban side. Talk to people WHILE you are working so that you can KEEP working. Take someone you don’t need anything from to lunch from time to time. I do it all the time and learn so much in the process and THIS is how you develop true long-term relationships. Join organizations within or outside of the industry and be a blessing to someone who needs YOU. Call and check up on an old industry friend from time to time and if they ask you for work be honest with them and don’t string them along. What you give out of your heart comes back in the most rewarding ways. Finally, do yourself a huge favor ask yourself four questions:

Do I trust the people in my life that I call my “friends?”

Am I a part of a local organization where I am accountable and people respond to me on a regular basis

Who could I call if I needed to go to the Hospital and who would stop everything and take me (and who would make up excuses)?

If I really needed a friend to be there for me during a crisis, who would come through and who would not?

In addition, you MUST be all these things to others if the roles were reversed. Whoever doesn’t make the list don’t make the mistake of calling them friends and limit your time with them or replace them.

We MUST establish a life outside of the industry and surround ourselves with people who care about us OUTSIDE of business. Isolation is not the answer just because other industry people won’t talk to you and you are not working.

I’m open to suggestions from readers as to how Radio Facts can help to resolve this issue as I have just heard today that at least 2 more former urban programmers are in trouble.

*J. Anthony Brown’s time alongside Tom Joyner on the radio looks to have come to an end.

According to Urban Insite, the comedian has quit the “Tom Joyner Morning Show” over a situation involving money. The site goes on to state that Brown’s departure occurred Wednesday (Jan. 13) and that it reached out Reach Media Inc., which syndicates the “TJMS,” to confirm or deny the report’s of Brown’s absence after the media company questioned the validity of its story.

Although it didn’t get a direct answer from Reach Media, sources revealed to Urban Insite that the situation stemmed from Brown receiving a 50% pay cut. The site reasoned that the issue was “directly related” to Brown’s attitude and disappearance from the long-running radio show.

Reach Media and its director of communications, Kelly Harrington, later replied back to the online publication with a transcript of an off-air conversation that took place between Brown, “TJMS” creator and co-host Tom Joyner and their fellow co-host Sybil Wilkes.

From the conversation, Brown mentioned that he was not alright after Joyner checked on him and added that he was “quitting.” Thinking that Brown was joking, Joyner and Wilkes responded with laughter.

Brown then replied that he was serious and ultimately walked out of the studio with no further response. Joyner’s attempt to reconnect with Brown several times as well as efforts to reach out to the comedian personally and professional proved unsuccessful as he and Wilkes were surprised Brown actually left the studio.

Urban Insite reports that Brown is currently under contract with Reach Media Inc. and the “TJMS,” adding that there is a plan underway to discuss what happened off-air with Brown.

The following is what Urban Insite received from Reach Media and Harrington, regarding its inquiry about Brown:

Today J. Anthony Brown surprised Tom Joyner, Sybil Wilkes and the production staff of the Tom Joyner Morning Show with the following:

Anthony Brown: No, I don’t feel good. Uh, in fact I’m quitting. I’m quitting today. (laughter from Tom and Sybil) You guys can have it, man. I’ve had enough of this, seriously. Bye

(more laughter from Tom and Sybil)

Sybil Wilkes: (chucking) Bye? What’s the matter?

Tom Joyner: I don’t know. Did he just cut the mic? Player?…Player?

So what say you? Based on this, do you think Brown has really quit the “TJMS”?

SIGN THE PETITION

The new performance royalty rates that internet radio will pay artists and record labels were released on December 16 and many small and mid-sized internet-only broadcasters are now fearing they’ll be put out of business. While there was a modest increase on the fee paid for each song played, the bigger concern is what’s missing.

Since 2009 webcasters with lower revenues have been able to pay rates based upon that income, rather than based on tracks played and audience size. Under the Webmaster Settlement Act of 2009 (WSA) stations with less than $1.25 million in revenue were able to pay a percentage of that in royalties ranging from 12% to 14%. That agreement was made between SoundExchange, which negotiates and collects performance royalties on behalf of copyright owners, and a group of internet radio stations. However, the WSA ended on December 31, 2015 and there is no new agreement to take its place.

This means that all internet broadcasters that qualified for revenue-based royalties in 2015 will now have to pay based upon the number of performances. This is calculated based upon the number of tracks played multiplied by the number of listeners to each track, which is then multiplied by the rate of $.0017 per performance. So, if a station averages 100 listeners at any given time and plays an average of 15 tracks an hour, then it has 1500 performances an hour, 36,000 per day, and 13,140,000 performances a year. This adds up to a royalty of $22,338 a year.

To understand how significant this change might be, consider that 100 average listeners isn’t a very big audience. So even if a webcaster were able to make $100,000 a year–equivalent to the budget of a small community radio station–the royalty obligation under the WSA would have only been $12,000. However, it’s more likely that a webcaster with that size audience would have a hard time making even $12,000 a year. For very small webcasters with little actual operating revenue the cost of doing business threatens to greatly outweigh actual income.

Impact on One Independent Internet Broadcaster

Rusty Hodge is the founder of San Francisco based internet radio group SomaFM, which operates 25 commercial-free, listener-supported music channels. Via email he said that given current listenership and use, he estimates that SomaFM’s royalty costs could increase by as much as 10 times, up to about $20,000 a month. He does caution that because the full text of the CRB’s ruling has yet to be published, the full impact on SomaFM is still unknown.

Hodge also explained that the station is considering a number of cost saving measures to limit the number of performances SomaFM has to pay for, like implementing two-hour connection limits. Such measures can help ensure that a stream is being actively listened to, rather than playing to an empty room. “We’ve already started dumping connections after four hours, and that’s lowered our usage (and hence royalties) by 10% already,” he said.

Because several SomaFM stations emphasize small labels and independent artists, another approach is working with those who are willing to allow their music to be streamed royalty-free in exchange for links to their website or other consideration. “We expect that we’ll have 95% of the content on Drone Zone be direct licenses, and that’s our 2nd most listened to channel,” Hodge said. He also predicts that SomaFM will be able to direct license at least half the music for the Groove Salad channel.

A Devastating Blow to Internet Radio Diversity

Nevertheless, strategies like these may not be sufficient for many webcasters to keep their operations going if no WSA replacement comes to fruition. Then, the all-too-realistic scenario is that thousands of US-based small webcasters will be forced to end broadcasts because they’ll be unable to pay the new performance royalty rates. Such a mass exodus may come as soon as the end of January because of the dire situation of the longstanding internet broadcasting platform Live365 which is facing the dual challenges of the royalty rate increase and a loss of investor funding. Live365 hosts thousands of streaming stations, most of which would go silent if the service shuts down.

The predicted loss of small and medium internet radio stations would be a devastating blow to the internet as a viable broadcasting alternative to terrestrial radio. In effect, launching a sustainable internet music station will require as much start up capital as building or buying a terrestrial radio station. David Porter, the founder of the 8tracks streaming platform, <a href="https://medium.com/@davidporter/my-take-on-the-new-royalty-rates-for-internet-radio-4333ead96b84#.5hphvq33g" target="_blank"">estimates that it will require at least $10 to $15 million to enter the internet radio market in the US.

Of course, there also would be a devastating reduction to the diversity of broadcasts available on the internet. While non-commercial terrestrial stations and internet-only college stations are unaffected by this change, the internet radio world is home to countless stations that cater to niches and interests that are barely ever heard even on the most cutting edge terrestrial signals.

Smooth Jazz Chicago is one internet broadcast that exists to fill a niche that is nearly gone from terrestrial radio. The three year-old station is one of the first casualties, having shut down operations on December 31. According to an open letter by founder Rick O’Dell, the station could not absorb the rate increases.

All Access reports that New York City-based Pulse87 is another station turning off its stream. Joel Salkowitz, owner of the dance music webcaster, told All Access, “Apparently, SoundExchange has decided, on behalf of the artists whose interests it purports to represent, that they would rather get 100% of NOTHING versus some reasonable percentage of SOMETHING!”

That line of reasoning has some resonance in the music community. The Future of Music Coalition advocates for musicians and therefore generally favors increased royalty rates. At the same time, in a statement CEO Casey Rae said,

“We are concerned, however, that there does not appear to be a distinction in rates for small commercial webcasters. Digital music benefits from diversity, and services with more modest operations often help developing talent and niche genres find audiences while contributing to the overall revenue pool. If there isn’t an option for new entrants to perform music from a broad range of artists, we may end up with a less diverse digital landscape.”

Opportunities for Relief?

Though it is reasonable for both listeners and internet broadcasters to be gravely concerned, the timing of the CRB’s decision coming so close to the end of the year and just before the holidays means that there may yet be opportunities for relief. The still upcoming release of the full text of the CRB’s ruling could open a window for a new WSA-like settlement from SoundExchange, though webcasters will probably have to organize quickly in order to make their case.

Broadcast attorney David Oxenford, whose firm represented small webcasters in the negotiation of the WSA, observes that the current situation resembles that of 2001, after the very first internet radio royalties went into effect. He writes on his blog that, “As after the 2001 and 2006 decisions, it is possible that there can be post-decision settlement agreements, but whether such deals can be negotiated and enacted remains to be seen.”

SomaFM’s Hodge said that he is working with a group of similarly-sized stations that has retained an attorney to pursue negotiations with the CRB and SoundExchange. “We are hoping we can get some kind of extension to the small webcasters agreement which ended in 2015. The first step will be getting the CRB to allow SoundExchange to enter into a side agreement with small webcasters.”

Webcasters also may look to their Congressional representatives to intervene and apply pressure on SoundExchange or the CRB. A petition to Congress started on December 27 currently has over 1,700 signatures. Yet, with new rates now going into effect, under current law neither SoundExchange nor the CRB are obligated to make any adjustment.

Small and mid-sized internet broadcasters and their listeners should hope that this looming threat is an oversight, or an unintended consequence, rather than a more concerted effort to quash independent webcasters. We’ll continue to watch the situation closely in the following weeks.

RAIN News has been doing an excellent job covering this issue, which is not surprising–though still greatly appreciated–given the publication’s focus on internet radio.
House Music started in the Black community mostly in the northeast and midwest areas with post-disco area DJs spinning and blending 4/4 tracks and their own custom beats. New York house DJs, Chicago House DJs, Baltimore house DJs, Detroit techno DJs are all on the scene and house music producers emerged during the 80s and early 90s and they even toured the world spreading the love and vibe of house music. House music took off worldwide thanks to these brothas DJing house tracks and making a name of themselves.

Now, let’s come back here to 2013 where dance music the biggest global genre in the world, got the biggest profit margins and have the biggest music festivals the world have seen, way bigger than Woodstock or Coachella or SWSX which feature dance music DJs:

Because of the enormous success of Tomorrowland and the fact that it is a Belgian festival, ID&T decided to give Belgians an exclusive chance with a pre-sale (80,000 of the 185,000 tickets) on March 24. In less than one day, all of the tickets sold out and at some moments there were 2,000,000 people on the online waiting list. The worldwide sale started April 7. Within 43 minutes, the other 100,000 tickets sold out. In addition to regular tickets, Tomorrowland partnered with Brussels Airlines to provide exclusive travel packages from over 15 cities around the world. Other highlights of the festival were the Cloud Rider, the highest mobile Ferris wheel in Europe, and the fact that 25 airlines were organised to bring spectators to the festival from all over the world.

Two million people on a damn waiting list and you know 185,000 x $347 is? That’s $64 million dollars on that one event in Boom, Belgium and we are not even talking about the economic impact of additional money on the local community. This is what the dance music and house music is bringing. And I don’t even know the numbers of Ultra Winter Festival in Miami but you also know those numbers are big too. These are people who create electronic dance tracks off a computer and use fake DJ turntables and wave in front of a crowd for their money.

So in case you are wondering the obvious – where are the Black house DJs and Black dance music producers and why they ain’t all in this and got this kind of event setup on this level? I’m not talking about Carl Cox in the picture above – he is worth more money than the rappers and he is from the UK. You know the house music DJs I’m talking about and yeah, I’m calling out the Chicago ones especially. All the years all of them been in the game and touring the world, where the hell is their $60 million dollar dance music festival?

In this article we are going to discuss another sad tale of Black people boxing themselves into a “Black identity” complex instead of elevate themselves to global leaders of their industry/game. And I hope every last one of you cats after reading this article get it in your head to stop doing this “Black identity” bullcrap, for real.

Just like hip-hop and Black comedy, the dance music industry is another one Black people founded and other people took over, took the industry global, they making millions and you still got these old head cats sitting around talking shit about “real hip-hop” or “real house music” with their broke simple ass and $200/night shows at some hole-in-a-wall club somewhere.

We are going to talk about what the Miami, Los Angeles and European House Music DJs done right and where the Black House Music DJs went sideways like they fell asleep in the airplane cockpit. The goal here is to educate brothas and sistas and existing DJs on how to get their proper share of the global dance music pie that our people started and become globally competitive instead of being a chump change local yokel DJ that is only known in Chicago or Baltimore or whatever.

Collaborations with Label and Indie Artists

Dance tracks now are more than a beat and some sample. They are now full songs with vocals and lyrics. The major house music DJs collaborated with well-known and even b-list artists on singles that can be played in the clubs around the world boosting the recognition of both the DJ and the profile of the artist.

They racking 10,000,000 to 100,000,000+ views on YouTube but meanwhile your local Black music DJ artist, who they collaborating with? They may be remixing but I don’t see them creating these kind of tracks for artists as original music that can sell globally and get the money up and the fame up, do you?

See, here it the problem and when you hear this, it’s going to piss you off. Number one, most of these Black dance music DJs got egos and full of self and very self-centered on their tracks and being the headliner and center of attention. That is just the way we Black folks act when we think we got a little fame and status and we don’t strive for bigger things, we just live off the little fame we think we got.

Number two, where are the Black-owned dance music radio stations to promote these tracks? They got these radio stations all over the world in all major cities that plays nothing but dance tracks but are Black folks running this stuff? Here is the thing – Black folks are boxing themselves in wanting to hear Trey Songz and not play these other songs because they don’t think it is “Black enough” for urban radio. What is “Black enough” to Black radio stations is songs that degrades Black women and talk about drug dealing and Black on Black violence. Again, we created this damn genre but dance music is not “Black enough”.

So all of these Black dance music DJs did nothing but live off the little fame/recognition they got and they still in 2013 pushing their own crates and doing small-time parties at club venues with paper fliers promotions while the mainstream DJs are doing festivals worldwide that bring in $60 million dollars gross sales.

Advance Programming Techniques for Modern Dance Music Tracks

When releasing a dance music track in 2013, it has to be in several formats and “open source” meaning there is some technical programming that need to be to allow other DJs and remixers to add their touch to the track. So you have to release the iTunes or radio version of the dance track, release a mixable version that is designed for DJ software that allow individual tracks and vocals to be muted on/off and this requires engineering.

Most of the Black DJs do not have this level of sophistication with computers and music in terms of programming. They are just releasing 4/4 126bpm tracks with the default factory sound of the Guitar Center drum machine or synthesizer and at best, have an external effect processor which is some old 1980s ish style of creating electronic music.

Electronic music programming is no different than any other form of digital publishing where you have to use different formats and templates to package the track for sale worldwide. In addition there are also sound programming techniques in electronic music to create certain kind of effects with sound that requires knowledge of bending sine wavelength and programming a pulsing arpeggio in a time/space continuum on modern keyboards. Software like Cubase for example requires a level of programming on the backend to create custom and proprietary music effects.

In fact, you can easily get away with programming dozens of dance music effects and apply to any sample loop or drum track and keep producing “new” hits over and over again and keep selling worldwide over and over again on DJ tours over and over again. But Black DJs have to sit down and learn keyboard/synthesizer programming sound and effect techniques.

Yes in case you wondering, Ed Dunn and some of the 3rd Strategic Institute can program keyboards and drum machine and you may catch me at Guitar Center in Cobb Parkway or off I-85 from time to time programming in the keyboard room. I still don’t understand why brothas don’t take their chick to Guitar Center because that an easy score right there. Let me take your woman with me to Guitar Center and let’s see how that works out, LOL.

Music Videos

This video by Zedd called Clarity is in my opinion the best overall music video, song and lyrics I’ve heard in a very long time. If you look at the video, notice how they sync the scene cut with the beat and how they use visuals that are surreal – we Black folks don’t make videos like this and it’s a shame. Look at 3:14 in this video – I’m sorry but that level of creativity and symbolism is why I love this whole video overall. Not to mention the beautiful keyboard sound programming technique done for the track and Foxes (the chick is an alt-rock singer) definitely took it to another level.

Black DJs when they make videos of their dance music, the videos are extremely cornball and egotistical and non-artististic and even worse, have no soul. I remember Jay-Z music video “on to the next one” that was very creative but then you got ignorant Black folks talking about that music video was the devil or illuminati or some crap like that. And that’s the kind of dumb crap that is holding Black people back because we are afraid to unleash our best creativity and artistic form to appease a dumb-downed Black audience used to drama media like R&B crap and reality TV shows.

Screw all of that – when we launch our IPTV, we are going to demand some of the most cutting edge, creative videos out there the Black community going to like or they going to have to just get over it. I want to see videos exactly like this Zedd and Clarity with the same level of intensity and surrealism and I don’t give a damn what some punk in the Black community have to say about it either. The same warning goes to the dance music DJs – stop putting out these bullshit cornball music videos with your dance tracks. Get a real damn video producer who is creative and talented and let them run with it.

Events and Festivals

The biggest loss is the Black dance music DJs making fun of “rave” and the whole rave culture. Rave was not about popping chemicals and hard edgy synth pads over heavy 4/4 beats. Rave was a gathering and an experience and once it began in one area, more and more raves popped up all around the world. Today, those raves matured into festivals and attracts tens of thousands to events and heavily sponsored and bring in serious revenue.

Black dance music DJs dropped the ball hard on this one because they stuck to their format instead of expanding out and reaching out globally and bringing in the global community as they toured the world. But other house music DJs already took the initiative of going worldwide and collaborating to create mega festivals and they started making super serious money.

Think about this – they bringing in 10,000 or even more to a dance music festival while at hip-hop concerts, cats want to gang-bang and shoot each other. With that said, are people still confused why dance music is being promoted and rising while hip-hop is being divested by the record companies? No one want to do rap or hip-hop anymore, homey. Sorry to break the bad news to all you cats talking about you want to be a rapper and ish.

Creating dance festivals is the big bang theory of the revenue generation of the DJ game. You create tracks, you collaborate with other DJs and you put on a big show that you sponsor and get paid and go worldwide to all the major urban areas in the world. $60 million here, $20 million there and you keep pushing out electronic dance tracks mostly generated by a computer. Crowds of people camping out, the positive vibe and that is why dance music is the global music standard today.

How to Reverse the Mistakes into a Positive Outcome

The moral of this whole article is another example of how we brothas and sistas cling too damn much on Black identity instead of global domination. Look, you can still have the “Black experience” which is what you are really after but we got to admit and acknowledge we f*cked up chasing after a Black identity and it messed up our paper chasing game for the past 30-40 years.

We got to build out a foundation and that is what you see missing here. We didn’t have real dance music record labels and in my opinion, a real dance music record label need to be as sophisticated as a software programming company, not some shady music industry moron. Dance music is programmed and there is patterns and practices in the science of dance music tracks and a good label like Ultra Records are using scientific methodologies in their tracks and releases.

Then we going to need our own radio stations and make them worldwide dance music stations and we play our own tracks on that stations and even some of the classics. Push those tracks on iTunes and make real YouTube videos and re-release some of those tracks. You got Black DJs with nice dance music track catalog from 1990s that only 10,000 people in Chicago know about that they need to just re-release in 2013 with a music video and modern spin and repackage.

But we got to start collaborating with artists and I don’t care if the artist is a has-been as their name will still lead more credibility to a good track with vocals. Those tracks will be heard on YouTube and played by DJs and push the recognition of the label and help that artist get more exposure. You got plenty of Black female artists out there dropped from a label who can be on these dance music tracks and music videos and get 10,000,000 views on YouTube easily worldwide and tour worldwide in clubs as a result.

Yeah, Black DJs messed up and I hope they take some time to reflect on what was written here, drop their pride and get into the global dance music scene the right way. And you young cats out there, I want you to really think about this dance music industry in terms of the global power and real money potential and even better contract signings where you just sign cats to one single that have 10,000,000 YouTube views and 700,000 digital sales and you create a catalog and put them on tour and create music festivals. That’s where the real music game is at and you cats been briefed.

ATLANTA -- Bobbi Kristina Brown has passed away.

The 22-year-old daughter of Bobby Brown and the late Whitney Houston had been unconscious after being found unresponsive in a bathtub in her Roswell home on Jan. 31.

Bobbi Kristina was rushed to the hospital, where she was placed in a medically induced coma. Despite months of treatment in two Atlanta hospitals and a rehab facility, she has never regained consciousness.

The family announced on June 24 she was moved to hospice care.

"She is finally at peace in the arms of God," her family told NBC News in a statement. "We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months."

Tyshaun apparently included his rap mixtape in the happy meals within a paper disc holder. On the mixtapes was printed the title of the project; “Tales Of A Real N*gga” was printed on the discs with a sharpie marker.

“I bought my son a happy meal and inside came a mysterious cd” says Sarah Platt, “I, like any other parent, would assume the cd was for children. I played the cd in my car for my son while we drove home and lord Jesus have mercy on Tyshaun, the mixtape was dreadful. Not only was it completely inappropriate, but it was also the weakest set of bars I’ve ever heard” finished Platt.

It is believed that Tyshaun has been sneaking his mixtape in happy meals for about 2 weeks already, and can be up to 300 meals. Oddly, no parents before Platt had confronted Tyshaun or even bothered to speak to the store

Prepare yourself for the celebrations and the debates because the 2015 XXL Freshman class cover is here.

A motley crew of rappers and singers stand proudly on the Summer 2015 cover, with each of the 10 encompassing the motto “Built to Win.” New Jersey rhymer Fetty Wap, Detroit’s own Dej Loaf, Georgia crooner Raury, West Coast rider Vince Staples, DMV area connects Shy Glizzy and GoldLink, Timbaland’s protege Tink, Atlanta rappers OG Maco and K Camp and G-Unit’s Kidd Kidd, who earned the fan-voted 10th spot, complete the entire Freshman class.

Hip-hop heads can certainly applaud Fetty Wap, 24, for his inclusion, considering his ride-or-die chick ode “Trap Queen” climbed to a No. 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart since its release in 2014, Kanye West welcomed him onstage to perform beside him and Drake jumped on the 300 Entertainment signee’s sing-song anthem “My Way.”

Twenty-four-year-old Dej Loaf is one of two women on the cover and for good reason. The soft-spoken rhymer’s 2014 warning number “Try Me” put her on the map, a Sell Sole mixtape followed along with a Columbia Records deal and even Eminem tapped her for his star-studded posse cut “Detroit vs. Everybody.”

Then there’s Raury, the R&B addition to the pack. While many of the featured Freshmen try their hand at singing their lyrics, the 18-year-old Georgia native excels. He’s showcased his blend of funk, rock and soul on his Indigo Child project with tracks like the soaring “God’s Whisper” and guitar-driven “Cigarette Song.” Plus he’s opened for OutKast.

Those are just a few of these rising artists’ highlights. Over the next month, freestyles, cyphers and interviews featuring the XXL Freshman class will be revealed. Which MC will have the most quote-worthy lines? Who will outshine their peers? Will the ladies ether the men? You’ll just have to stay tuned to find out.

So how did the XXL staff determine which artists would make their way onto the coveted cover? Editor-in-Chief Vanessa Satten explains the staff selection process in her editor’s letter inside the magazine and in the behind-the-scenes video from the cover shoot below. Narrowing down the bevy of talent in hip-hop and R&B to these 10 is no easy task, but the final result is certainly telling of these stars that have been shining brightly over the past year. Each one will demonstrate why they have a seat on the cover during a performance at the Best Buy Theater in New York City on June 30 and at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on July 13.

Sound off with your thoughts on the XXL Freshman class 2015 cover, which hits newsstands June 30, in the comments below:

Louis Johnson, the bassist who scored a string of hits in the 1970s and 1980s as one-half of the Brothers Johnson, passed away at the age of 60 on Thursday (May 21).

The Brothers Johnson got their start with 1976′s Look Out for #1, which lived up to its title by peaking at the top spot on the Billboard R&B chart (and going Top 10 on the pop chart). They were also spinning off the hit singles “Get the Funk Out Ma Face,” “Free and Single” and especially “I’ll Be Good to You,” which went on to become one of the duo’s defining songs, hitting No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the R&B tally.

Other hits followed, including a 1977 cover of Shuggie Otis’ “Strawberry Letter 23″ and the 1980 single “Stomp,” but the Brothers Johnson split in the early ’80s to pursue their own projects, and only reunited sporadically over the ensuing years, while both brothers — Louis and guitarist and vocalist George Johnson — briefly pursed solo recording careers before moving on to session work.

Louis went on to have a successful and prolific career as a highly regarded session musician. His distinctive slap bass technique, which earned him the nickname “Thunder Thumbs,” made him an in-demand player for a wide variety of artists during the early ’80s, and put him in the studio to create a number of top-selling LPs, which included Herb Alpert’s Grammy-winning 1979 smash Rise as well as George Benson’s Give Me the Night. His most widely heard performances, however, came through Michael Jackson, who used Johnson on his Off the Wall, Thriller and Dangerous albums.

No cause of death has been reported for Johnson, who just celebrated his 60th birthday in April, but however he left us, it was far too soon. The Boombox offers condolences and well wishes to his family, and encourages you to spend at least part of your day delving into the tremendous body of work he left behind.

Check out how some members of the music industry are choosing to remember his legacy today.

President Obama is committed to making his Administration the most open and participatory in history, and will give Americans a new venue to engage on the issues that matter most to them.”

“Hello, Twitter! It’s Barack. Really! Six years in, they’re finally giving me my own account,” the President’s first tweet reads.

The White House also posted video of the President sending his first tweet from the Oval Office:

Within minutes of the first tweet, Obama’s new account had broken 500,000 followers — though he only follows 65 people himself. The President quickly followed Columbia University, Harvard, John Kerry, Bill Clinton, various governmental agencies, and even George H.W. Bush. He also followed every Chicago sports team except the Cubs and the WNBA’s Chicago Sky.

The President was inundated with “welcome” tweets from supporters. Some, including Bill Clinton, wondered if the new username stays with the office of President:

But conservatives across the country (and even the world) were sure to welcome him in their own fashion:

As always, we can count on the Right to treat our President as, in the words of Ted Nugent, a “subhuman mongrel.” The hatred spewed at this President easily outdoes that with which any other President has faced — including G.W. Bush, and he is a monster.

Hopefully, the President is successful in continuing to engage Twitter users. After all, social media is how information spreads, these days.

Super producer Polow Da Don and DJ Siobhan Bell teamed up to release the track titled, “Pay Me,” featuring IAMIAMI. “Pay Me” is an uptempo bass heavy track that includes a sample from Lyn Collins’ 1972 song, “Think (About It).” The sample is most notably recognized in the late 1980s hit, “It Takes Two,” by Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock.

Bell boasts the bravado of a male throughout the track with her hard-hitting lyrics and witty punch lines. Serving as an ode to males to step their game up (“Can’t make it rain dubs get the f— out the club”) and also for females to keep their men close by, (Imma bad b—-, and ya girl ain’t s—), this track will have the club turned up for the remainder of the summer for sure.

Bell hails from London and since 2010, she has covered a considerable amount of ground on the music scene. Dabbling in different genres, including trap, R&B and house has made her a mainstay in her hometown.

Polow has enjoyed success on a number of fronts while producing for stars such as Keri Hilson, Usher, Chris Brown, Mario and Ester Dean. His record with Ester Dean, “Drop It Low,” is also sampled in “Pay Me” as well. “ ‘Pay Me’ is a female anthem for the club. It allows women to say how they really feel under the disguise of a party record,” Polow stated. “It has an old-school Miami feel to it, it’s fun.”

Recently, Polow received a new deal with Epic Records, which experienced a resurgence thanks to LA Reid.

Be on the look out for more music from Siobhan Bell and also for more music from Polow Da Don as he has produced three new tracks on Ciara’s upcoming album.

King, known for his hits Lucille, Sweet Black Angel and Rock Me Baby, died in his sleep in Las Vegas.

Born in Mississippi, King began performing in the 1940s, going on to influence a generation of musicians, and working with Eric Clapton and U2.

Once ranked as the third greatest guitarist of all time, he had been suffering ill health in recent months.
He was recently taken to hospital with a diabetes-related illness.

A former farmhand, King was awarded his 15th Grammy award in 2009 for his album One Kind Favor.

He was also inducted into both the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Rolling Stone magazine placed him behind only Jimi Hendrix and Duane Allman in its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time.

Until recently, King performed in at least 100 concerts a year.
'Heartfelt vocals'

He fused together both jazz and blues on his beloved guitar, a Gibson ES-344 he lovingly dubbed "Lucille".
In the early part of his career, he played to exclusively black audiences, but his heartfelt vocals and undeniable talent saw him embraced by a much broader fanbase as time went on - touring Europe and topping the charts.

Younger musicians such as Clapton and Steve Miller, who admired his work, introduced him to a new generation of fans in the late '60s with hits like The Thrill is Gone.
Albums such as Live at County Cook Jail and BB King in London followed.

His career was reignited in the late 1980s when he duetted with U2 on When Love Comes To Town.
At the turn of the millennium, aged 75, he once again achieved major commercial success with the Eric Clapton collaboration Riding With the King.

"King's is now the name most synonymous with the blues, much as Louis Armstrong's once was with jazz," critic Francis Davis wrote in his 1995 book The History of the Blues. "You don't have to be a blues fan to have heard of King."
