NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -
Police in South Jersey say a man who was apparently looking for warm clothing or a place to spend the night got trapped in a clothing collection box and died.
It happened in the city of Bridgeton, a small city near the mouth of the Delaware River.
Police got a call at about 11 p.m. about a man dangling from one of the collection boxes at the rear of a Salvation Army Church.
Police arrived to find Joseph L. Hanshaw, 50, was still trapped by the hinged door giving access to the interior.
They say it took several minutes for the officers to dismantle the door mechanism to free the Bridgeton man.
Once out free of the box, members of the Bridgeton Fire Department ambulance squad continued a frantic effort to save his life.
He was rushed to a hospital ER but it was too late.
Police say the man's relatives were notified after the incident.
Bridgeton police called it an "unfortunate and tragic death."
