"IMPORTANT INFO FOR ALL INDEPENDENT ARTISTS/BANDS/MUSICIANS".... The Common Mistakes Musicians/artists/bands make:

Mistakes  Independent Musicians/artists/Bands make:
With recent changes in the music industry comes an entirely new way for artists to market themselves and make a career in the music industry. Unfortunately, a lot of artists still pursue old ideas of what used to work to get a record labels attention, spending thousands of dollars and not understanding why they are still not successful.

This list is just a few common things that after meeting with a Major Label's A&R group, artists discovered were a waste of time and money:

Paying for radio play “Spins”:
Obviously, radio play is part of every superstar’s career! However, except for mom being able to brag about you at church, a record executive would not be impressed. Radio has a time and a place in the development of an artist. A well thought out marketing strategy to acquire and capture real fans from airplay needs to be in place. It’s not about how many spins you have, it’s about how you turned that publicity into tangible fans!

Paying for likes, views, etc. on social media
This seems to fool many new artists. Other than bragging rights at the club or impressing that someone special, that’s about all you’ll get from paying for these. Label executives and music promoters know the difference between views, likes, followers and real fans! Let’s face it, how many of your 3,000 Facebook friends bought your last album?
artists/Musicians/Bands should only use these sites as a tool to capture fans and build your fan data base for the express purpose of marketing and sales.

Buying onto shows:{this should be a no no for artists/bands/musicians}:
It is important for artists at all levels to perform. We find most new artists pay to appear in shows for the wrong reason or have no game plan when booking a show! Major touring acts all tour for a reason; to sell records! Where you are in your career will depend on your end goal. Regardless, you need a well thought out plan with measurable goals.
If possible develop an extensive marketing plan with measurable results to be used to a****s the success of your shows and public appearances!

Paying to get in front of A&R{this should be a no no for artists/musicians/bands}:
Let’s be honest, the music business has drastically changed over recent years. We hear it directly from record label executives well as from the artists who have sat with them. “You are very talented, and your total package looks great but you need to get your numbers up!” is a common response from record label executives. They aren't talking about your Twitter Followers, they are talking about $$SALES! They want artists that are making money on their own and know how to make money!
When you are generating revenue as an artist/musician/band, you will not only be able to meet with A&R free of charge but will have people willing to financially back your deal!

Vanity Labels/Distribution:
This could result in more of a waste of time than money! A good label can sit down and show you from start to finish how they are going to help you in your career. Money spent on your part should come with an ROI Summary (Return On Investment), monetary or otherwise. Although there are rarely any guarantees in the music business, a solid Business/Marketing plan that makes sense is always a better investment. Labels offering Distribution deals should always have the ability to show you a marketing plan using modern marketing techniques to promote and sell your music. After all, this is supposed to be the business they know the best!

The fact is, major record labels want to bring on artists that are already generating an $income. They care more about your P&L statement (profit and loss) than any other numbers you provide! It is important to have a good "package" but equally as important is knowing how to use that package for profit!
