Marcos Maidana gets pill from Alex Ariza between rounds in Broner fight? (Video)

On Saturday night, Marcos Maidana was able to overwhelm Adrien Broner with his power to stake his claim to the WBO welterweight title. It was an impressive performance from Maidana, who dropped Broner multiple times, but now their is a grey cloud hanging over the result after a video surfaced on the Internet.

The video shows Maidana in his corner in between rounds and what appears to be Alex Ariza slipping some sort of pill to the Argentinian fighter.

Initial reaction to the video is that Ariza was giving Maidana a smelling salt of sorts, which would be an obvious violation of the rules.

You can see Ariza placing a pill inside of a napkin before wiping Maidana’s face. It has certainly raised some questions.

Here is a video of the exchange, so you can see it happen and judge for yourself:

The pill appears to remain inside of Ariza’s napkin, which seems to fall right in line with the smelling salt speculation. Unfortunately, that would place a black mark on Maidana’s win. Of course, there is also the chance that this is simply a cotton swab and people are grasping for straws and an explanation for why Broner lost other than the fact that he was simply outclassed.

It will be interesting to see what/if anything happens as a result of an investigation from the video, but we’d have to imagine that Broner will not have any interest in a rematch if some shenanigans are found.
