Greetings Larry,

Thank you for starting this forum. Hopefully T. Neal will chime in on the discussion, I'd like to read his response.

I'm not a DJ, but wanted to respond to your forum nonetheless. In particular I was interested in what you stated "REALLY LET ARTISTS UNDERSTAND WHAT IT'S GOING TO TAKE TO BREAK CLUB TO RADIO WITHOUT PAYOLA..." Was this statement talking about not paying for Club Rotation and/or Radio Rotation?

Different people have varying opinions on paying DJs to play music in clubs. Here's a point of consideration. If a DJ can play 10 songs (this is for example purposes only) in an hour and has twenty great I mean really great music in his or her hand doesn't money now factor into the equation in addition to relationships that the DJ has with the artist?

Whats up guy,
man this is my first post on this board but as a DJ,let me give u the truth of the matter.I personally think payola is some bullshit and it dont matter who it is thats paying.I say that because,at the point you gotta pay a dj to play your record, you would be better off remixing the song or scrapping the project. If its a good song it will support itself. So,do DJ's really break songs ? Some do some dont.First of all,i think its a DJ's job to break music,if he truly believes in the song.At the same time,a DJ has a dance floor to maintain.Every song is not a dance song.Me myself,i look for dancefloor songs, songs with club atmospheres, songs about people in a club. Why would i play a riding song at a party ? why would i play shoot em up bang bang gang banging songs when im entertaining a club thats 85% females ? Im in Detroit and sometimes, alot of times, there are alot more females than males, which mean i have to play alot more hustle/ballroom/stepping songs. As an artist, when u make a song,u have to have a target audience where you can expect your song to do well. Also artists need to get off of the cars and rims and jewelry songs, that shyt is played out.As a DJ when i review my music,if i hear a guy rapping about something he probably aint even got,i move on.DJ's today have access to so much music, ask yourself, whats so special about your song that every DJ should want to be the first to play it.Now me myself, when i like a song,i will play the shit out of it every chance i get,i dont care who made it.Then u have other DJ's who only wanna play whats hot by radio and video standards,im talking about the human juke boxes that can be replaced with a mixed cd.Those are the ones who will only play a song if its already hot.so it breaks down to the fact that everything isnt for everybody and an artist cant expect every DJ to play his songs.Go sit and listen to some DJ's spin, see if he is playing anything that u have never heard, see if he is breaking new music, thats the one u want to get your music to.Beware of those with the same playlist as the radio. Also very important in the business of music nowadays, your relationships with DJ's.I play my music to the females, because they will dance by themselves if need be,or with their girl.Guys are gonna stand on the sideline and diddy bop.Pac told biggie to rap for the females, cause they will buy your shit and the fellas want what the women want.I apply that to DJing. So if i get the ladies on the dancefloor, the fellas gonna go get on that ass.Peace.
