People continued to bet on things such as Matka and Teen Patti. In particular, as the 20th century progressed and India began to take centre stage in world cricket, sports betting became increasingly popular.
The techniques and methods of British bookmakers were adopted and a vast underworld network of illegal betting appeared in India. This continues to this very day and there are often scandals regarding cricket betting in both the domestic and international media.
Betting becomes a part of life
As always, betting continues to be an integral part of social and cultural life in India, with people betting for fun and also as a cultural practice over religious festivals such as Diwali. The government's continued resistance to legalizing betting is becoming increasingly untenable. The ICC has attributed illegal betting in India to much of the corruption in the sport. Meanwhile as online betting takes off and the government misses tax collection opportunities there is a mounting pressure on the government to legalize betting.
This change in regulation has already begun in two states. Sikkim has set up an online lottery and there are rumors that they will grant more licenses in the near future. Meanwhile, Goa has recently built a number of Casinos both in the city of Panjim and also on the Mandovi River. The Indian poker tour is located there and it has brought economic prosperity to the region.
Whilst the legislative future of betting in India may be uncertain, one thing is not. Betting has persisted in Indian culture throughout the past 4,000 years and seems set on a course to continue to do into the foreseeable future.
