Trenton, N.J. mayor Tony Mack—also known as “the little guy” and “Napoleon”— tried to brush off alleged corruption charges, but was unable to escape being taken into custody. Mack was arrested early Monday (Sept. 10) morning, for charges that he accepted bribes, among other examples of misconduct.
His supporter, and owner of JoJo's Steak House, Joseph “Jo Jo” Giorgianna, was also taking into custody; and rather than wait to be apprehended, the mayor's brother, Ralphiel Macksurrendered to the FBI this morning.
According to the criminal complaint filed today, Mack has been linked to more than $100,000 in bribes:
“The investigation revealed evidence of a conspiracy among the defendants and other corrupt certain functions of Trenton City government in favor of a purported developer seeking to build a parking garage on City-owned property in exchange for cash payments totaling approximate[ly] $119,000 , a total of $54,000 that the defendants actually accepted in one way or another and another $65,000 that they anticipated accepting.”
Mack was the focus of an FBI probe both at his home and city hall offices. He has maintained his innocence and conveniently went on vacation at the height of the federal inquiry. Both he and his brother appeared before a judge later in the day, and have since been released on $150,000 bail.
If convicted, Mack faces up to 20 years in prison.
