NEWS FROM KERRY GORDY(remake of THE LAST DRAGON!)

Press Releases for The Last Dragon

In the most obvious piece of casting news since Mel Gibson was announced to play Riggs in Lethal Weapon 2, Samuel L. Jackson will be playing the Shogun of Harlem (aka Sho’ Nuff) in the remake of The Last Dragon. Kerry Gordy, son of the original’s director, Berry, is producing for Columbia Pictures along with the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA. Dallas Jackson (Uncle P) is writing the updated screenplay.

The Last Dragon is about a cool young dude named Leroy Green, a student of the martial arts who hopes to become the greatest martial artist in the known world (or at least New York City.) This accomplishment would earn him the title of, you guessed it, The Last Dragon, but it would also give him the Glow. (Which would be awesome if it stood for the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, but alas…) In his quest for the title, Green faces off against nefarious end bosses including the Shogun of Harlem, a badass in bad shades that says “mofo” and commands an army of sycophants.

I have no particular love for The Last Dragon, but I do think a remake is a silly idea. The movie is an iconic cult film of the eighties that belongs in the decade that birthed it. It would be like remaking Xanadu or Better Off Dead. To make it fit into today’s world the entire essence of the movie will have to be changed.

Do you want to see a remake of The Last Dragon? Are you surprised that Samuel L. Jackson was cast?

Samuel L. Jackson is set to star as the bad guy in Columbia Pictures' remake of Berry Gordy's 1985 cult classic The Last Dragon, says The Hollywood Reporter. Jackson will play Sho'nuff, the Shogun of Harlem, a role played in the original by the late Julius Carry.

"I'm a huge fan of the original and look forward to bringing Sho'Nuff into the 21st century," Jackson said.

Writing the screenplay as well as producing is Dallas Jackson, who heads up the urban family label DJ Classicz with Davis. Wu-Tang Clan's RZA is co-producing.

The updated plot will be along the same lines of the original, centering on young martial arts student Leroy Green in his quest through the streets of New York to achieve the highest level of martial arts accomplishment, known as the Last Dragon. Those who achieve the high ranking possess the Glow, making them the greatest fighter alive.

The project will take a new look at "Last Dragon" coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Motown next year. Davis Entertainment's John Davis and Gordy's son Kerry Gordy are producing.

Samuel L. Jackson has the right stuff to play Sho'nuff.

The actor is set to star in a remake of the 1985 cult martial arts classic The Last Dragon, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

Originated by the late Julius Carry, Sho'nuff is the self-proclaimed Shotgun of Harlem, who answers his own questions (e.g. "Am I the baddest mofo lowdown around this town?") with "Sho'nuff."

Something tells us, Jackson won't have any trouble playing the "baddest mofo."

The 1985 film, a critical bomb, but a financial success, tells the story of Leroy Green's pursuit to become the world's greatest martial arts artist, like his idol Bruce Lee, and achieve the status of the Last Dragon.

Sho'nuff is a thug who repeatedly taunts Green.

The update won't deviate too much from the first and was greenlit to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Motown next year.

Davis Entertainment's John Davis and Kerry Gordy, son of Berry Gordy, who directed the original, are producing, alongside Wu-Tang Clan's RZA and Dallas Jackson, who will also serve as scribe.
