A teenage boy was killed and three other teens were wounded when a masked gunman walked up to them in a McDonald’s parking lot in Chicago’s Rogers Park and opened fire this Wednesday afternoon, authorities said
The boy, 17, was shot in the head and died on the scene, authorities said. He had collapsed in a driveway just south of the McDonald’s at 6740 N. Clark St., next to a strip mall with a pizza restaurant, a dental office and a dollar store. Authorities had not immediately confirmed the victim’s birth date, and for a time thought he might be 16.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office was not releasing the boy’s name, but family members identified him as Markeyo Carr. Carr’s aunt Juanita Carr said he was the third of five children and was close with his siblings. He was an aspiring musician who recorded demo tapes, she said.
The boy was shot just after arriving at McDonalds for a bite to eat, she said.
The victims had a verbal fight with several other people outside the McDonald’s just before the shooting, police said. The four were in the parking lot of the McDonald’s when they were approached around 3:30 p.m. by the masked gunman, Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien said. News Affairs did not have a detailed description of the shooter.
A girl about 15 years old was shot several times and an 18-year-old man was shot in the lower back, police said. Both of them were taken to Presence St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in serious condition.
Another 18-year-old man was shot in the arm and was being treated at Weiss Memorial Hospital, according to O’Brien.
The McDonald’s often attracts a young rowdy crowd, according to neighbors, who said there have been fights there. One neighbor pointed to what he said was a bullet hole on the north side of the building from a prior shooting.
Police say at least two of the victims had gang affiliations.
