The high school basketball coach shot in Humboldt Park last week was struck as he shielded his 15-year-old daughter from a burst of gunfire, according to prosecutors.
Shawn Harrington, an assistant boys basketball coach at Marshall Metro High School, was struck twice and is paralyzed, according to court records. A bullet was found lodged in the headrest of his daughter's seat but she was not injured.
The harrowing new details emerged today after authorities charged a 21-year-old man with attempted murder.
Deandre Thompson was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm. During his midday bond court appearance, he was ordered held without bail.
Authorities believe a second person was involved but have not charged anyone else in the shooting, which happened about 7:45 a.m. Thursday as Harrington was inside a car in the 3800 block of West Augusta Boulevard.
Harrington, 38, was driving his daughter to school and had stopped at a red light, according to authorities. When shots rang out, he leaned over to shield his daughter's body, authorities said in court records.
Despite being shot in the upper back and under his left arm, he managed to drive a short distance before stopping, according to court records. Video footage from a nearby business captured the shooting, according to court records.
Harrington's condition has been stabilized but he remains in the hospital and is paralyzed, authorities said.
The next scheduled court appearance for Thompson, who lives in the 800 block of North Springfield Avenue, is Feb. 11.
