A couple of weeks ago, my man T. Neal sent an email based on a call he got from a frustrated youngster trying to find his way in the business. To Refresh your memory, and for the benefit of those who didn't see it, here it is:
A Old ass DJ who's been the air or mixshow for a long ass time that gets set in their ways, don't know how to cooperate with labels/artists need to get the fuck outta the way and pass the torch.
"I thought that radio was meant to set u up for a higher position in the company or in your future endeavors, not to Retire from"If you been on air "so-called" mixing since Dynasty was on Solar, LA Reid was with the Deele, Kevin Black was at Death Row, Steve Rifkin started Loud, Sylvia has Sugerhill, Diddy started Bad Boy, Tommy Boy was a label, or STILL use NETZERO, you should move your old, un-established, smoke-screen ass around & let the young cats that are out on the street EAT!
This is the main reason why the industry is fucked up .. YOU. Pass the fucking torch!
You look like Michael Jordan with the Bobcats or Brett Farve's last game in NY. Please leave on top and stop cock-blocking myself & other young artist.
the bottom line is, PASS the torch ... Give some direction ... Become a manager .... Start a Label of your own or get your own station & program it.
Don't worry, we'll try not to forget about u since we all know, if your don't have any legs in the street, you are only as good as your last gig ... Out of sight, outta mind ... Yeah, we know.
No one gets paid for mixshow ... So WHY close to 60 are u still there .. Does that take care of your family ... Does it?
Stop sagging your jeans, stop saying u have "swagger" when back when YO OLD ASS started it was call "charisma" & take yo OLD, no-ear havin' ass to URBAN AC radio.
While I agree that there are a lot of old farts clouding up our industry, I don't take too kindly to people using that as an excuse for why they can't get ahead. The truth of the matter is, if YOU are on your GRIND, then no one can stop you. Why in the world would you waste valuable time talking about someone who ain't gonna give a damn about you or give up their spot for you?
I truly understand your frustration, but what good is it serving you? You may very well be the most talented mixer/radio personality in the Universe. The question is, are you READY? If someone is truly too old, those in power will take notice. Not in YOUR time, but in theirs. If you are that good, TAKE HIS/HER Spot by force - not by crying and bitching about what you don't have!
What are you doing to keep your name, or your artist's name hot in your city and in the industry? If you are waiting for someone to just hand you your shot, you're going to be waiting for a long time. Radio isn't a stepping stone. For some of us, it's our craft. There is nothing wrong with wanting to have dreams outside of radio, but if radio doesn't work out for you where you are, what are YOU prepared to do to make things happen?
Let me give you an example: I remember when the Core had 6 members - Now we're the biggest DJ and CULTURE organization ON THE PLANET. We didn't get here about crying. The Core DJ's Radio show is heard in 3 continents - without the help of a Syndicator - JUST OUR GRIND!
I'm a take-me-or-leave-me kind of person. There's no in between. People either love me or hate me and I'm cool with that. I have enough faith in GOD confidence in myself to make anything I imagine possible. If someone is cock-blocking you, there is nothing you can do about it other than find a way around them. Complaining is for losers.
This is a dirty business - while I don't condone the lows some people will go to in order to save their ass, I believe that no matter what someone tries to do, what God has for you is FOR YOU and they can't stop his plan! Stop crying and make your situation happen.
