Last night, we were blessed enough to see one of the most fascinating shooting displays in the history of the NBA playoffs. Game 2 between the Boston Celtics and the Chicago Bulls was just as nail biting as game 1, but this time the ending was a little different.
At the end of the first half the bulls lead 61-58 with Ray Allen scoring only 2 points, and Paul Pierce had 8. Rajon Rondo was a question mark after coming down awkwardly on his right ankle, and Leon Poe was missing in action too due to his own injury. Though Derrick Rose only had 6 points because of not playing most of the first half due to foul trouble, the Bulls still lead. The reason, Ben Gordon and the rest of the baby Bulls wanted to win. Chicago’s multiple weapons and Boston’s lack of defense tipped the scales in the Bulls’ favor in the first half, but that’s why we play two halves.
In the 3rd quarter Ray Allen went ballistic, trading shot for shot with Chicago’s Gordon. Celtics head coach Doc Rivers said he asked the team at half time who would volunteer to be Boston’s scorer and Ray Allen stepped up. He then went on to score 28 points including the game winner with less than 3 seconds left in the game leading Boston to a 118-115 victory over Chicago.
Rajon Rondo had a triple double to the tune of 19 points, 16 rebounds, 12 assist, and 5 steals. Big Baby Glen Davis chipped in 26 points, Pierce finished with 18 points, and Kendrick Perkins played like a beast putting up 16 points and 12 crucial rebounds.
Monday was a much better performance from Boston, and they needed it. Ben Gordon scored 42 points, the most by any Bull in the playoffs since Michael Jordan in game 6 against the Jazz in 1998. Each shot he hit was a big shot, at crucial times that Chicago really need some points on the board.
John Salmons who gave Paul Pierce hell all night had 17 points and Brad Miller contributed 16 points. Derrick Rose was held to only 10 points after an explosive 36-point performance in game 1.
Going into game three, in Chicago, the Celtics will need to step up to a higher level on defense as word has come down that they will be without Poe, who tore his acl in last night’s game and is out for the remainder of the playoffs. Game 3 takes place Thursday in Chicago.
On the west coast side of life, the real San Antonio Spurs stood up and took game 2 from the mavericks. Tony Parker scored 38 points, as Dallas had no answer for stopping him. San Antonio held Dallas to 40 percent shooting and controlled this game with their defense.
Dallas showed last night once again why they have never won a championship, because they never play defense. Jason Kidd is too slow to hold Parker, and JJ Barea isn’t athletic enough to hold any of the Spurs guards. To make matter worse there is never an answer for the “Big Fundamental” Tim Duncan who had 13 points and 11 rebounds in the Spurs 105-84 win over Dallas.
