2012 was an exciting year for TuneCore, but more importantly, it was a banner year for TuneCore Artists with $101.8 million earned in 2012 alone. Since TuneCore’s launch in 2006, 1.8 billion TuneCore Artist digital music units have been downloaded or streamed and TuneCore Artists have earned over $250 million in total from the sales and streams of their music.
“This is what it’s all about: giving any artist – those distributing their first release, full-time and part-time musicians, top-named talent – the same opportunity to sell their music anywhere in the world. We at TuneCore pride ourselves on using one of the highest quality music distribution platforms while not taking a penny from artists’ music sales,” says Scott Ackerman, TuneCore COO.
In examining the TuneCore Artists distribution trends over the past few years, TuneCore saw that some things didn’t change—rock, for example, has remained the top-ranked album genre for the past five years. There were, however, notable developments in 2012: TuneCore saw streaming downloads grow over 200% and their Music Publishing Administration business (an integrated song rights management service launched in 2011) showed significant growth, including the recent signing of four new sub-publishing agreements. 2012 also marked the year that TuneCore Japan opened its digital doors.
